A Bouquet of Donuts?!?!!!! Featured

Plus all the links and extra bits from Holly & Dan for Wednesday 13 September.

Top things we talked about:

Allergic to flowers, or just want something a bit different for your wedding? Why not swap the bouquet of flowers for a bouquet of donuts?!?!!!

A cat cafe on a train? Now a real thing in Japan (and we really want this to happen in New Zealand!).

There's no such as thing as too early to put up Christmas decorations, right? Well you can at least be assured you won't be the first to get into the festive season (103 sleeps to go, after all!).

Awful or Awesome: Getting Fined For A Day Off School

Should you be fined for taking your child out of school during term time for something other than sickness or bereavement?

Tamar: I say Awful! Kids learn heaps by going on holiday and visiting other places. Taking kids out of school once a year or so is no big deal, especially in primary school.

Adrian: This is a tough issue. Both sides of the argument have a valid point. One side says 'staying in school and learning is important'. The other side say 'my kids can learn a lot more on their holiday - not all learning takes place in school'. I work in the education sector, but as much as I value formal education, I think fines for taking kids out of school are a bit strong.

Di: It is actually illegal here, but don't think anything is done to enforce or prosecute those that do. We have to mark registers with a reason code for absences and there is one called 'unjustifued' - absent without valid reason - this is what we use for those absences such as a holiday in term time.

Paul: The law stifles social life. Family would not be able to come to our weddings etc unless we ensure that we line up our events with their breaks as well as our own. Effectively this law attacks "Family". It lacks common sense. I hate it.

New music from Lauren Daigle:

Today's Bible Society Verse of the Day is 1 Thessalonians 4:4 - "Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honour."

We live in a world and in a culture that says to us constantly "if it feels right, go ahead and do it". But here's the thing, things that feel good, aren't necessarily very good for us, or our relationship with God. So Paul wrote this letter, reminding us that God's will for our life is to be holy – set apart, so that means living different than what society says.
