Three New Zealanders have been caught up in a hostage drama in West Papua.
Foreign minister Murray McCully has confirmed the incident happened, although details are vague. It's reported up to 10 hikers were held captive for a day on Sunday. All tourist hostages have now been released and are safe.
Mr McCully says tourists are advised against travelling to the Indonesian territory, which is the western peninsula of the island of New Guinea. MFAT travel warnings are also in place against all non-essential travel to the Central Sulawesi and Maluku provinces.
