Auckland motorists commuting northwards from the CBD have won their battle to have the Wellington Street on-ramp reopened.
Roading authorities will remove the concrete barriers in six weeks' time, once again allowing motorists to travel across the harbour bridge from the popular inner city on-ramp.
The ramp was closed for work on the Victoria Park tunnel in May last year. NZTA had been considering keeping it closed, arguing that would improve motorway traffic flows; but the Transport Authority nonetheless called for submissions - and a resounding 72% of respondents urged that the Wellington Street motorway access be re-opened.
State Highways manager Tommy Parker says that strong response convinced official to reopen the on-ramp. However, there is a catch - he says they will be constraining flows during the afternoon traffic peak.
That caveat concerned some in the community, such as Secretary of the Herne Bay Residents Association, Christine Cavanagh. She says it is hard to understand how limited access at peak times will reduce traffic congestion in their local streets.
